Beta Reading

Beta reading work comes after alfa reading and before ARC (Advanced Reader Copy).

It is that moment before the writer sends the manuscript to the publisher. He needs a fresh set of eyes to read his story, to find any inconsistencies, whatever their nature.

A beta reader is a detective who is searching for any inconsistencies, missing clues, plot holes and so on.

My approach

I prefer to read in a word document, so I can insert any comments inside the text while reading.

For novels, besides my comments inside the text, I fill out a worksheet with information, thoughts, comments, questions about the characters, scenes, plots, pacing, dialogues, overall impressions.

My comments are pertinent and respectful. Sometimes I find myself thinking about a situation, a character, even a word after I finished reading. I like to think of the story before I send my feedback to the writer.
